Course Description

This course serves as an introduction to the art of graphic design. We are going to explore the theory and practice of various design techniques to gain a better understanding of how to manipulate pixel based images and vector graphics. Through demonstrations and hands-on experience, students learn editing techniques to enable them to improve on their visual communication skills.

Course Objectives

After successful completion of this course the student should:

  • Better understand techniques creative designers use to communicate visually.
  • Have a thorough working knowledge of designing using popular design tools.
  • Understand image formats and color modes.
  • Understand color theory and color meanings.
  • Design business cards, posters, flyers, staff IDs, brochures etc.
  • Be able to retouch images by learning how to color correct and grading.

Understand RGB vs. CMYK, and how to use color theory to create visually appealing, brand-aligned designs.

Create print-ready materials including business cards, flyers, and banners. Learn about bleed, DPI, and paper sizes.

Design for screens—social media, web banners, presentations, and digital ads. Explore pixel dimensions and responsive visuals.

Use Photoshop to enhance, correct, and creatively manipulate photos. Tools include masking, retouching, and filters.

Explore the principles of effective logo creation, from sketching to digital refinement and exporting across platforms.

Understand what makes a brand memorable. Learn how to develop a visual identity system that tells a consistent story.
